Aquaculture developments in Vietnam took off in the mid 1980s with Wageningen University and Ghent University proving to be key knowledge providers in the early years, later followed by many other universities and institutions from different European countries (France, UK, Norway, Hungary, Denmark, etc.).
With the dramatic expansion of the pangasius and shrimp farming industries, interaction with Europe has grown exponentially. The gradual maturing of the University sectors in Vietnam and elsewhere in Asia and their exposure to European academic-commercial networks in the sector has undoubtedly stimulated interest in working more closely together-both within and between national borders.
